MADRID, April 25, 2025 — Spanish tennis star and world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz has officially withdrawn from the Madrid Open due to injury concerns. The 20-year-old cited an ongoing upper leg injury, compounded by a new issue in his left leg, as the reasons for his decision. Alcaraz was scheduled to play on Saturday, but after reviewing medical scans, he opted out of the tournament.
Alcaraz Confirms Medical-Driven DecisionAlcaraz revealed that the upper leg discomfort he experienced during the Barcelona Open final last Sunday has worsened. In addition, a new strain in his left leg has emerged, forcing him to reassess his fitness levels. “After undergoing tests, my team and I have decided it’s best to not compete in Madrid,” said Alcaraz in a statement shared on social media.
The young Spaniard had been placed in the same half of the draw as Novak Djokovic, setting up a potential semifinal showdown. Alcaraz had previously won the Madrid Open in 2022 and 2023, and was the second seed in this year’s edition.
French Open Outlook Remains PositiveDespite the setback, Alcaraz reassured fans that his injuries are not expected to hinder his participation at Roland Garros, where he is the defending champion. Last year, he clinched the French Open title with a memorable win over Alexander Zverev, who has since overtaken him to become the world No. 2 after winning the Munich Open.
A Stellar 2025 Season So FarCarlos Alcaraz has had a strong run in 2025, posting a 24-5 win-loss record. He claimed titles in Rotterdam (hard court) and Monte Carlo (clay court) earlier this year. However, the packed schedule seems to have taken a toll, with Alcaraz previously citing fatigue as a concern following his deep runs in recent tournaments.
His absence from Madrid opens up the draw for contenders and raises questions about the toll of the ATP tour’s demanding schedule on young players like Alcaraz.
