Pahalgam terror attack: Agencies name 14 active local terrorists in J&K amid probe

NEW DELHI: Intelligence agencies have identified 14 local terrorists currently active in Jammu and Kashmir, amid increased security concerns following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam on Tuesday, April 22, where 26 mostly tourists were killed.

These operatives, ranging in age from 20 to 40 years, are providing crucial support to Pakistani militants, including logistics and local intelligence, as reported by ANI citing official sources.

The intelligence report reveals these individuals' connections to three Pakistan-supported terrorist organisations: Hizbul Mujahideen , Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The distribution shows three operatives linked to Hizbul Mujahideen, eight to LeT, and three to JeM.

The identified individuals are: Adil Rehman Dentoo, Asif Ahmed Sheikh, Ahsan Ahmed Sheikh, Haris Nazir, Aamir Nazir Wani, Yawar Ahmed Bhat, Asif Ahmed Khanday, Naseer Ahmed Wani, Shahid Ahmed Kutay, Aamir Ahmed Dar, Adnan Safi Dar, Zubair Ahmed Wani, Haroon Rashid Ganai, and Zakir Ahmed Ganie, according to sources cited by the agency.

Adil Rehman Dentoo (21)
Adil Rehman Dentoo joined the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in 2021 and is currently serving as the Sopore district commander of the banned terrorist outfit.

Asif Ahmed Sheikh (28)
Asif Ahmed Sheikh, associated with Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), has been active since 2022 and is the district commander of Awantipora, regularly involved in terrorist activities.

Ahsan Ahmed Sheikh (23)
Ahsan Ahmed Sheikh is an active LeT terrorist operating in Pulwama and has been continuously engaged in terrorist activities since 2023.

Haris Nazir (20)
Haris Nazir, a terrorist from Pulwama, has been active with LeT since 2023.

Aamir Nazir Wani (20)
Aamir Nazir Wani is an active Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist from Pulwama, involved in terrorist activities since 2024.

Yawar Ahmed Bhat
Yawar Ahmed Bhat is fully active in Pulwama district and has been associated with JeM since 2024.

Asif Ahmed Khanday (24)
A terrorist from Shopian district, Asif Ahmed Khanday joined Hizbul Mujahideen in July 2015. He remains active and plays a role in assisting Pakistani terrorists.

Naseer Ahmed Wani (21)
Naseer Ahmed Wani has been an active member of LeT in Shopian since 2019, significantly aiding Pakistani terrorists.

Shahid Ahmed Kutay (27)
Shahid Ahmed Kutay, operating in Shopian, has been associated with LeT and its proxy outfit The Resistance Front (TRF) since 2023.

Aamir Ahmed Dar
Aamir Ahmed Dar has been active in Shopian since 2023, working with LeT and playing a major role in aiding foreign terrorists.

Adnan Safi Dar
Another terrorist from Shopian, Adnan Safi Dar has been working jointly for LeT and TRF since 2024, acting as a crucial link between Pakistani handlers and local terrorists.

Zubair Ahmed Wani (39)
Also known as Abu Ubaida alias Usman, Zubair Ahmed Wani is the Chief Operational Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen in Anantnag district.

He is categorised as an A+ active terrorist and has been involved in multiple attacks on security forces since 2018.

Haroon Rashid Ganai (32)

Haroon Rashid Ganai, an active Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist from Anantnag, underwent training in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in 2018 and has recently returned to South Kashmir.

Zakir Ahmed Ganie

Zakir Ahmed Ganie, a major terrorist from Kulgam district, is associated with LeT and has been continuously involved in attacks on security forces and targeted killings.

The identification of these local terror operatives emerges as authorities step up their campaign to eliminate support structures enabling cross-border terrorism .

Security personnel have initiated joint operations throughout South Kashmir, focusing on Anantnag and Pulwama regions, where several identified suspects are thought to be active.

Officials confirm these identities form part of a broader intelligence file used to prevent future strikes and interrupt terror support systems in the Valley.

Authorities are working to establish connections between these 14 terrorists and the five attackers who targeted 26 tourists at the scenic Baisaran meadow, near Pahalgam tourist destination at 2 PM on April 22.

Previously, authorities released sketches of three terrorists--Asif Fauji, Suleman Shah and Abu Talha. They also identified two local operatives, Adil Guri and Ahsan. A reward of Rs 20 lakh has been declared for each suspect.

The NIA, along with other agencies, is assisting the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the investigation, after Pakistan-based terror outfit LeT’s proxy group, TRF, claimed responsibility for the attack.
