NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, saying he has "destroyed" the dignity of his office by consistently making hollow promises to 140 crore Indians.
" Pradhanmantri ji ne 140 crore Bhartiyon ke samne baar-baar khokhle waade karke desh ke sarvoch aur sammaanajank pad ki garima ko dhwast kar diya hai (Prime Minister has destroyed the dignity of the highest and most respected post of the country by repeatedly making hollow promises to 140 crore Indians)," Priyanka Gandhi said in a post on X.
She advised that rather than focusing on the Congress, PM Modi should concentrate on upholding his position's dignity "by resorting to truth".
Priyanka Gandhi's remarks followed PM Modi's Friday statement where he criticised the Congress for making unrealistic promises. He referred to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's remarks about state units needing to make properly budgeted promises.
Modi expressed concerns about the declining economic conditions in Congress-governed states including Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana.
Responding to PM Modi's statement, Priyanka Gandhi said, " Mahatma Gandhi used to say 'Truth is God'. ' Satyameva Jayate ' written in Mundaka Upanishad is our national motto. These mottos establishing truth became the ideals of the Indian freedom movement, the reconstruction of India and public life.
"In a country where truth is the basis of thousands of years of culture, the person sitting on the highest post should not resort to falsehood."
She defended Congress's track record, saying it's state governments had fulfilled their promises in Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh through implemented guarantees.
Priyanka Gandhi also listed several unfulfilled promises of PM Modi-led central government including "'100 days plan', '2 crore jobs every year', '100 smart cities', 'bringing back black money', 'reducing inflation and unemployment', 'doubling farmers' income', 'bringing rupee at par with dollar' and bringing 'Achche Din'."
Congress media head Pawan Khera also criticised PM Modi's leadership, claiming the prime minister had compromised his position's dignity through false promises.
