'Where does America's money go?' Viral TikTok videos of NYC subway spark outrage online

Send Push
The NYC Subway has been a long-running transit system for 101 years, since its launch on October 27, 1904. This vital transport network serves people from all walks of life, whether they're commuting for work, leisure, or both. However, over the years, due to neglect by authorities, the quality of the system has declined, leading to frequent criticism and mockery from riders.

A video shared by TikToker who goes by the name Schbachlq has been going viral on social media. It shows water cascading from the ceiling of the Jefferson Street Station in Brooklyn along with footage of burst pipes at the 34th Street stop in Manhattan. Additionally, there were rats moving around hauling food and trash as they ran underground. The clip raised quite an interesting question comparing the NYS Subway of "developed country" America to the pristine transit hubs of "developing" China. The video has reached over 2.5 million views on the internet, propelling people to mock the subway and its deteriorating conditions.

There have been other clips as well showcasing the streets of America swamped by homeless people and the streets of China which are immaculate and clean. “Do you know how much China used to admire the US. They saw America as a mentor and tried to learn everything from it,” said a clip.

People have been raging on social media apps such as X, about America being a more wealthy economy than China but still having a transport system that is disappointing. Many even asked where the American money went.

Many on the app pointed out how the US spent a lot of money helping other countries such as Israel and the welfare of communities that are homeless, immigrants or others. "To the Marxist and Socialist that run NYC " wrote one person, "To the pockets of crooked politicians ie Pelosi, Schiff etc" added another.

Others agreed with the fact that the NYC subways needed a lot of work to bring it back to its previous state. "For real. Our transportation systems suck" wrote a person on X. "They spend just enough for upkeep and improvements, yet billions are diverted elsewhere. Corruption runs rampant in the MTA . Meanwhile, people are nearly drowning in sewage every storm season, and horrific crimes are increasing." added another.
