Shah Rukh Khan once found himself in a tricky yet hilarious situation on the sets of the 2014 Bollywood film ‘Happy New Year’. Despite being the film’s lead actor, SRK decided not to pull up his co-stars Abhishek Bachchan and Vivaan Shah even after director Farah Khan complained about their mischief. Why? Because of their legendary fathers – Amitabh Bachchan and Naseeruddin Shah!

This funny story came to light during promotions of the film, where the team cam popular TV quiz show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (KBC), hosted by none other than Amitabh Bachchan himself.

The 'Happy New Year' set drama
The film ‘Happy New Year’, directed by Farah Khan, was a full-on entertainer with a star-studded cast. Alongside Shah Rukh, the movie featured Abhishek Bachchan, Vivaan Shah, Deepika Padukone, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani, and Jackie Shroff. While it was packed with action, dance, and fun on-screen, the off-screen moments were just as entertaining.

Farah, known for being a strict but fun director, had a hard time handling Abhishek and Vivaan on set. Their constant joking, chatter, and cheeky behaviour started getting on her nerves.

Farah’s funny complaint to SRK

During the KBC appearance in 2014, while promoting the film, SRK shared a behind-the-scenes moment with Big B and the rest of the cast. He revealed how Farah complained to him about the two actors causing chaos during the shoot.

SRK said, “Farah kabhi complain nahi karti as Farah khud hi bahut tandarust hai. Sab ko theek kar leti hai set ke upar.” (Farah never complains because she’s very tough herself. She manages to handle everyone on set.)

But this time, Farah had had enough. “Ek baar isne mujhe bahut complain kiya. Isne kaha ki Abhishek aur Vivaan jo hai dono ke dono bahut pareshan kar rahe hain, distracted rehte hain, baat cheet kar rahe hain, tang kar rahe hain. Baar baar meri photo leke Twitter pe daal rahe hain. Bahut tang karte hain Abhishek aur Vivaan isko, toh tum jaake unse baat karo.” (Once, she seriously complained to me. She said that Abhishek and Vivaan are constantly disturbing her, distracted, always chatting, annoying her, and keep clicking her pictures to post on Twitter. They really trouble her, so I should go talk to them.)

SRK tried to help… but had second thoughts

Trying to keep peace on the set, Shah Rukh offered to talk to the two young actors. At first, he tried to calm Farah down by brushing it off. “Maine kaha nahi Farah bacche hai yaar, aise thode hi na hota hai yaar, ho jayega.” (I said, ‘No Farah, they’re just kids, it’s not a big deal, it’ll be fine.)

But Farah was in no mood to joke. “No, today I'm very angry. You go and talk.”

So, SRK prepared himself to give them a serious talk. But just as he was about to speak, he had a sudden realisation that made him stop in his tracks. “Toh Sir, main bada aise kamar kas ke pahuch gaya. Main bolne ko shuru hua phir mujhe dimaag mein aaya ki Abhishek Bachchan ke jo daddy hai woh Mr. Amitabh Bachchan hai. Phir aaya ki Vivaan ke jo daddy hai woh Mr. Naseeruddin Shah hai. Phir mere dimaag mein aaya ki agar inke baap inko nahi sikha sake toh main kya sikhaunga?” (So sir, I geared up and went seriously to talk to them. I was just about to begin when it struck me – Abhishek’s father is Mr Amitabh Bachchan. Then I remembered Vivaan’s father is Mr Naseeruddin Shah. And I thought – if their fathers couldn’t teach them, what could I possibly teach them?)

The whole audience burst into laughter – including Amitabh Bachchan!
