Bollywood icon Rekha has been working in the entertainment industry since the late 1950s. She entered showbiz as a child actor, and later went on to become a star. Known for her versatility and iconic roles, Rekha had once opened up about how she had no interest in working in the films initially.

During an interview with the BBC in 1986, Rekha spoke about her journey of becoming a superstar. She recalled that she started her journey at a very young age. “I became a star overnight,” she said.

Rekha also confessed that she never wanted to be an actor, it was her mother’s dream. “Mujhe toh maar maar ke banaya gaya (I was beaten up to become one),” she said.

Rekha recalled that she started working as a child artist, when she was only 3. She was 13, when she came to Mumbai. Shatrujeet Pal was looking for a new heroine in Madras for a film, and somebody told them that there is this South Indian girl who can speak little Hindi. Rekha, however, didn't know the language back then. They came to meet Rekha’s mother and happened to see her. They asked if she knows Hindi, to which Rekha said 'No'. They also asked her if she wants to work in Hindi films, and the answer was the same No. “Okay, we'll sign you for the film tomorrow,” they said!
