Road collapse near New Kundanpuri and Dugri causes traffic disruptions in Ludhiana.

Ludhiana: Two roads caved in within 24 hours due to ongoing construction and heavy water flow, prompting emergency repairs and traffic disruption in the city.

A portion of the road near New Kundanpuri collapsed late on Monday after erosion caused by diverted water flow from the Buddha Dariya. Civic authorities responded swiftly, placing large stones and debris at the site to prevent further damage. The road was closed quickly as a precaution.

The municipal corporation linked the collapse to the simultaneous demolition and reconstruction of a bridge in the area. With water being rerouted obliquely along the drain to accommodate pillar construction, fast-flowing currents eroded the soil along the banks, leading to the road subsiding. "We've contained the erosion using debris and sand. The situation is under control now," an MC official claimed. "Both bridge projects are being monitored closely to avoid further incidents."

The disruption continued on Tuesday when a gravel-laden tipper truck sank into a caved-in section of Dugri Road near a marriage palace. The incident caused long traffic delays as workers struggled to extract the heavy vehicle from the pit. MC's executive engineer, Ekjot Singh, said the vehicle's weight had also damaged an underground water supply line. "We repaired the line as soon as the tipper was removed," he said.

While no injuries were reported in either incident, the back-to-back road collapses have raised concerns over infrastructure stability amid ongoing urban construction and monsoon-season vulnerabilities.
