Ludhiana: In a fresh crackdown on repeat drug offenders, police on Tuesday launched an early morning raid in Mohalla Peeru Banda, arresting four drug peddlers and placing five others under preventive detention. The operation targeted nine individuals with a combined total of more than 40 FIRs for drug trafficking — all of whom were out on bail.
Police commissioner Swapan Sharma said the operation, carried out around 4 am, had involved more than 100 police personnel, including senior officers, and focused on a known drug hotspot in the city's Satem Tabri area. The arrested were all found in possession of heroin at the time. They are Sahil of New Ashok Nagar (with 40g heroin haul), Sanjeev Kumar ‘Sonu' of Om Park Colony in Haibowal Kalan (120g), Raju of New Shivpuri (155g), and Mehakpreet ‘Vicky' Bath of Bajigar Dera (50g).
Sharma said: "The accused were facing multiple FIRs already and had resumed drug trafficking after securing bail. We had been monitoring their movements closely and launched the strike to disrupt their operations." Police are maintaining a high level of surveillance on peddlers who return to the drug trade after release. The commissioner said: "Our officers have been given specific targets and are acting on intelligence to dismantle these repeat networks."
Tuesday's action follows a similar operation on April 26, when police raided 25 premises in Haibowal and Jawahar Nagar, arresting six peddlers and recovering narcotics. Authorities concerned say more such operations are planned as part of the commissionerate's intensified campaign to root out drug trafficking across Ludhiana.
