New Delhi: The Delhi Development Authority's (DDA) ambitious Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) project is nearing completion, with full operations expected by December 2024. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 3,600 crore, is being executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to enhance connectivity and ease traffic congestion in Delhi and neighbouring states. Stretching over a total length of 75.71 kilometres, the project covers 54.21 kilometres within Delhi and 21.50 kilometres extending into Haryana.Designed as Delhi's third Ring Road, the UER-II consists of five packages—three within Delhi and two in Haryana. Once operational, it will link NH-44 in North Delhi to NH-48 in South Delhi, passing through areas like Bawana, Narela-Kanjhawala, Mundka, and Dwarka, while also connecting to Sonepat and Gurugram in Haryana. The project will also integrate with the Eastern and Western peripheral expressways, reducing traffic congestion and pollution in Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena recently reviewed the progress of the project alongside senior officials from the DDA, NHAI, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and representatives from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Saxena emphasised the need for coordination among all stakeholders to ensure the timely completion of the remaining work. While the project is expected to bring significant socio-economic and infrastructural benefits to North, North-West, West, and South-West Delhi, Saxena raised concerns about specific construction challenges. He highlighted the need for strategic planning around the Mangeshpur Drain, advising that support pillars should not obstruct the drainage system, as this has led to flooding issues in the past.
