The Shanghai Masters has become a cornerstone of the snooker calendar and is considered the curtain-raiser for the new season, despite the Championship League taking place prior to the event in China. All the big names come out to compete at the Luwan Gymnasium, with Zhao Xintong making his first professional appearance as world champion at the event.
Ronnie O'Sullivan is not afraid to skip an event, but enjoys competing in the Far East and didn't want to miss playing in Shanghai. He defeated Barry Hawkins in his opening match before going down to 2024 Crucible winner Kyren Wilson on Thursday.
Zhao received a hero's welcome and the atmosphere was turned up to 11 when he took on the pioneer of Chinese snooker - Ding Junhui. The world champ came through that test in another changing of the guard, setting up a mouthwatering semi-final with Wilson.
That pair, in addition to fellow members of the last four standing in Shanghai, Ali Carter and Mark Selby, will all be handsomely rewarded for their efforts.
Losing semi-finalists have walked away with £70,000 in their pockets, from the total prize pool of £800,000.
O'Sullivan and those who lost in the quarters banked £35,000, while £17,500 went to players who made the last 16. While as much as £10,000 went to last-24 losers, the same amount as the highest break for the tournament.
