Liverpool's move for Marc Guehi could be at risk after Crystal Palace suffered a late setback on deadline day, according to reports. The Reds have finally agreed a last-minute deal to sign Guehi after months of trying to reach a compromise in talks. They are set to pay around £35million for the player's signature, with Crystal Palace inserting a 10 per cent sell-on clause into the deal.
In response, the south Londoners were reportedly set to raid rivals Brighton and Hove Albion for the signature of Igor Julio. He was due to move to Selhurst Park on loan until the end of the season. However, it has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that the move has collapsed in a dramatic twist to the tale.
Igor is no longer expected to join the Eagles, with the news arriving as soon as Guehi had completed a medical ahead of his move to Liverpool. It leaves Crystal Palace with just a couple of hours to find a replacement for the England international.
Only time will tell if the setback impacts Guehi's proposed Anfield switch, which is seemingly all but done. Liverpool are said to be 'waiting for the outcome' and will be desperately hoping that Crystal Palace do not block the move at the eleventh hour.
Oliver Glasner has already hinted that Guehi could stay at the club if a suitable replacement is not found ahead of tonight's deadline.
Speaking after Sunday's victory over Aston Villa, the Crystal Palace boss said: "We had a meeting in March and we had an agreement that we're just selling Marc if we have the right replacement in.
"We wanted to have this replacement at the beginning of the season, the pre-season, to be independent from this situation. This was July 9, today is August 31, there is no replacement in the building.
"So it is clear that one part of the agreement is not fulfilled, that means we can't sell Marc. And it's not for Oliver Glasner. It's not a gift or a wish for Oliver Glasner. It's necessary for playing a successful season.
"We had a great start, we are the first time European football and I think our fans deserve to have the best players available.
"And know, if we don't sell Marc then Marc will accept it because he loves Crystal Palace, he loves the team and we feel the appreciation he has and he also feels the same from his side."
Sky Sports, meanwhile, have reported that Guehi will be allowed to complete his Liverpool switch regardless. Palace are said to be scouring the market for alternative targets, but they are quickly running out of time to find a replacement.
Liverpool have also agreed a deadline-day deal to sign Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, having chased his signature throughout the window. They are set to pay a transfer fee in the region of £125m, which will set a new British transfer record.
Isak travelled to Liverpool on Monday morning to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of his blockbuster move to Anfield. Everything indicates the deal will be finalised before the transfer window slams shut.
