Good Morning Britain was interrupted for an urgent "breaking news" announcement regarding Lord Peter Mandelson. Britain's ambassador to Washington has now broken his silence on the friendship he shared with convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Earlier this week, private notes written by Lord Mendelson to Epstein for his 50th birthday surfaced, featuring photos of him in a bathrobe and describing the disgraced financier as his "best pal". He signed off the message with "we love you". In a new interview with , Lord Mandelson has admitted more "very embarrassing" details of his friendship with Epstein will be revealed.
Breaking the news to viewers, Susanna Reid said: "Lord Mandelson has admitted he carried out his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein for far longer than he should have done. Ed Balls said: "He said that because he is gay, he may have seen a different side to the predator, who died in a New York jail in 2019." Susanna continued: "He said that the Epstein letter that he wrote was 'very embarrassing' to read, he has profound sympathy for those who suffered and he regrets deeply carrying on association with him for far longer than he should've done.
"He kept up with him a number of years after he met him, he fell for his lies, he fell for assurances and with hindsight he realised he'd been wrong to believe him."
The presenter added: "He also apparently admitted that more embarrassing revelations are to come."
This is bad news for Keir Starmer as Lord Mandelson revealed he has not yet discussed the matter with the Prime Minister or US President Donald Trump.
Moments after the news broke, Ed and Susanna were joined by the newly appointed Education Minister Josh MacAlister, who assured Lord Mandelson still has the "full support" of Sir Keir.
The politician said: "The ambassador has made it clear for a number of days that he deeply regrets ever having been introduced to Jeffrey Epstein. I haven't seen the interview so I don't want to say much more based on what you've seen because I've not had a chance to see it, but yes, the ambassador has the support of government."
The presenter was stunned by this claim, pointing out that Lord Mandelson said there's more embarrassing revelations to come.
He declared: "I'm not sure how wise it is for you to say that right this moment, he does have the full support of the prime minister. Doesn't he need to discuss it with the prime minister? Doesn't the prime minister need to see what these embarrassing revelations are?
"I don't want to embarrass you but you might be eating your words in an hour."
MacAlister hit back: "What I know is that the ambassador deeply regrets ever having been introduced to Jeffrey Epstein. He's taken the opportunity to speak for himself in an interview. I've not had a chance to see that.
"In the very brief clips I've seen, he's also said that he regrets having that relationship and for it continuing as long as it did. I've not got any more to add on that but the government has backed Peter Mandelson as the ambassador."
