However, the outage affected Gauff's post-match commitments. The American shared footage from inside the women's locker room, which was pitch black except for one emergency light away from the shower area.
Gauff booked her spot in the Madrid Open quarter-final just in the nick of time. The 21-year-old got revenge on Belinda Bencic a few weeks after losing to the Swiss star in Indian Wells, sealing a 6-4 6-2 victory.
Had the match gone on any longer, it could have been suspended due to the power outage currently affecting large parts of Spain and Portugal. Although Gauff's fourth-round clash wasn't impacted, she was still caught out in the locker room.
The American took to Instagram to share a video from the player's area inside the Caja Magica, explaining that she had to try and shower in the dark.
"There's literally no power. I'm literally in the locker room about to take a shower," she said, panning across the dark gym before filming her reflection in the mirror.
"All of this is just emergency light right here but over here there is no power where the showers are. I'm about to take a shower and I'll let you know how it goes."
Gauff also shared a photo of a woman carrying a tray of candles around the grounds to give the players more light, and said she was relieved to finish her match in time.
"Apparently the power is out in most of the country and in Portugal I finished my match right before it happened thank God," the world No. 4 wrote.
The American also had an issue during her on-court interview, when the microphone cut out while she was answering a question. Gauff stepped back, looking confused, as electricity went out across the Caja Magica and most of Madrid.
She exchanged some words with the reporter behind the camera, likely being filled in on the sudden power failure.
