Jammu and Kashmir made history by hosting its first-ever international marathon in Srinagar on Sunday, with more than 2,000 athletes, including 59 international participants, taking part. The marathon was flagged off by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty at Polo View Street around 6:20 a.m.

In a display of his physical fitness, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah joined the athletes briefly, accompanied by his security personnel. This event marks a significant milestone for Kashmir as it welcomes athletes from across the globe.

According to officials, this is the first time Kashmir has hosted a marathon of such magnitude. Athletes participated in two categories: the full 42 km marathon and a 21 km half marathon. Participants included athletes from 29 Indian Union Territories and 13 foreign countries.

Director of Tourism, Raja Yaqoob Farooq, shared that over 2,000 registrations were received for the event. He added, “There are 59 foreign athletes participating in both the full and half marathons, alongside 30 to 35 participants from Kashmir. This event will send a global message that Kashmir is peaceful and ready to host international events.”

The marathon not only focused on sports but also aimed to showcase Kashmiri culture. Athletes were treated to local cuisine and given the opportunity to explore the famous Gulmarg ski resort, including a cable car ride.

As athletes enjoyed the scenic beauty of Kashmir, including its pristine lakes, alpine forests, and vibrant autumn season, the event further reinforced Kashmir's image as a destination for international gatherings. Earlier this year, the region hosted a G20 meeting and a sports car racing event, both of which contributed to a significant rise in tourism.
