India has called on Bangladesh to take decisive action against "extremist" groups threatening the safety of the Hindu community in the wake of rising tensions in Chittagong. The call follows reports of unrest attributed to provocative social media posts targeting the minority group.
During a recent media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the reported attacks on Hindus and attributed the unrest to incendiary online posts. "We have seen many videos circulating on social media. It is condemnable," Jaiswal said.
Jaiswal highlighted that it is Bangladesh’s responsibility to protect its minority communities, adding, "In Chittagong, incendiary posts were made on social media that were linked to the Hindu community. This provoked disturbances, with some members facing threats and reports of property looting."
India previously expressed concern on October 12 over an attack on a puja mandap and the theft from a Kali temple in Bangladesh, urging the Bangladeshi government to safeguard minority communities and their places of worship.
In a related development, Jaiswal addressed questions about a congratulatory message from Sheikh Hasina, clarifying India's understanding of her status. Additionally, he provided insights into a recent workshop organized by the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), where representatives from Myanmar engaged in discussions on India's experiences in constitutionalism and federalism. Jaiswal emphasized India's commitment to supporting peace, stability, and democracy in Myanmar.
