Sunil Gavaskar's Statue to Grace Wankhede Stadium, MCA to Inaugurate Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has taken a historic step to honour cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. On July 31, MCA announced that a statue of the former Indian captain will be installed at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai—a move that has delighted fans across the country.

Gavaskar to be immortalised at Wankhede

The statue of the Little Master, who tormented bowlers worldwide during his illustrious career, will be part of the upcoming MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum. The museum is set to be inaugurated in the second half of August. Alongside Gavaskar, a statue of former BCCI president Sharad Pawar will also be installed in the same museum.

Gavaskar reacts to the honour

Expressing his gratitude, Sunil Gavaskar said:

“I feel very happy and honoured. My parent organisation, MCA, has decided to place my statue at the entrance of the new Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum. I’ll forever remain grateful to MCA for giving me my first break in cricket and then the opportunity to represent India.”

Museum dedicated to Mumbai’s cricket legacy

MCA President Ajinkya Naik explained that the museum aims to honour Mumbai’s cricketing greats:

“The Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum is our tribute to the legends of Mumbai cricket. Gavaskar’s statue will symbolise determination and inspire young cricketers to dream big.”

A look at Gavaskar’s stellar career

Sunil Gavaskar played 125 Test matches from 1971 to 1987, scoring:

  • 10,122 runs at an average of 51.12

  • 34 centuries and 45 half-centuries

  • Highest Test score: *236

In ODIs, he played 108 matches, scoring:

  • 3,092 runs at an average of 35.13

  • 1 century and 27 fifties

  • Best ODI score: 103 not out
