In a significant move to combat noise pollution across Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that 3,367 loudspeakers have been removed from various religious establishments throughout the state. This comprehensive effort, aimed at creating a quieter environment, has encompassed temples, mosques, churches, gurudwaras, and other places of worship.
The Chief Minister's statement came in response to a question from BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar, who highlighted the adverse effects of noise pollution on wildlife. Fadnavis affirmed that, as of now, no loudspeakers remain installed at religious places in Maharashtra.
A Peaceful Transition in MumbaiThe initiative saw particular success in Mumbai, where the Mumbai Police successfully oversaw the removal of 1,608 loudspeakers from places of worship within the city. Notably, this extensive operation was carried out without any reported religious or communal tension. The removed loudspeakers in Mumbai included 1,149 from mosques, 48 from temples, 10 from churches, 4 from gurudwaras, and 147 from other sites. The Chief Minister emphasized that loudspeakers will not be re-installed at any religious locations in Mumbai.
Accountability for Future ComplianceTo ensure sustained compliance, Devendra Fadnavis issued a stern warning to law enforcement. He stated that if any loudspeakers are re-installed at religious places without proper authorization, the local police station officer will be held entirely responsible. This measure underscores the government's commitment to maintaining a loudspeaker-free environment at religious sites statewide.
