Poynton railway tragedy as two teenagers killed on train line as probe launched

Two teenagers were tragically killed on a railway line - prompting services to be shut off as emergency services scrambled to the scene.

Police were called to a "casualty" at Poynton Station in Cheshire, shortly before 10.30pm on Thursday. The British Transport Police, who are leading the investigation, said their deaths are not being treated as suspicious.

Officials closed railway lines so that medics could reach the teenagers. Several services were affected by the closure including Avanti West Coast, Cross Country and Northern services. Services didn't resume until around 6am this morning.

A spokesperson for the force told The Mirror: "Officers were called at around 10.10pm last night (3 July) to reports of a casualty on the tracks near Poynton railway station.

"Officers attended with paramedics. Very sadly and despite the best efforts of paramedics two people were both pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner."
