Bird-bath owners take note – you need to make one important adjustment to keep these feathery friends suitably hydrated. Especially in the recentheat.
While many Brits have been basking in the warm temperatures and abundant sunshine, the heat hasn’t been a blessing for certainanimals. Some creatures, such as birds, can struggle when temperatures jump. Unlike humans, birds don’t have sweat glands, which makes it more difficult for them to cool down.
In extreme cases, this can lead to heat stress, which can cause them to become ill and disoriented. In some cases, this can even be fatal for birds.

Fortunately, there is one easy step that garden-owners can take to help make their gardens more appealing to birds – particularly in warm weather conditions.
Calum Madock is a gardening expert from HomeHow. He advises that one of the best ways to keep birds in your garden is to make sure you’re providing them with enough water.
He explained: “Attracting birds is more than just providing a reliable food source – they will also need plenty of fresh water. A bird bath is a great way to provide a water source and is simple to set up.”
He continued: “You can find decorative bird baths in most garden stores but can even create your own using items such as a shallow saucepan or old dish placed on a stable base like an overturned bucket or plant pot.”
Although he warns that stable water sources “may easily become crowded” by birds. This is particularly true during the summer, as they try to stay cool.

In this case, Calum advises that you may want to consider setting up multiple different water sources or bird baths around your garden. This one change will help make sure your garden birds are receiving the hydration they need.
You can also get creative, too. Calum added: “You could even create different types of water features like static, moving, or misting to appeal to different species.”
For those who are green-fingered, another brilliant way to encourage birds to visit your garden is by growing plants and flowers they enjoy. Certain plants offer them both food and nesting material.
Top bird-friendly choices include honeysuckle, rowan berries and honeysuckle. Not only do these make gorgeous additions to a summer garden, they provide birds with plenty of crucial nutrition.
Another good tip to keep birds safe and happy in your garden during the warmer months is to make sure you place bird feeders in the shade. This helps them stay cool while feeding.
