Canada PM on Trump tariff: After the US imposed a 35% tariff on Canada, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that he will talk to Trump when it makes sense.

The US has increased the already imposed 25% tariff on Canada to 35%. According to the White House, this decision was taken due to Canada's "continued inaction and retaliation". Trump claimed that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had called for talks before the August 1 deadline, but nothing happened. In the press conference, Trump said, "We did not talk to Canada today. He (Carney) has called, let's see what happens."
Canada's response: We will talk when necessary
During a press conference in British Columbia, PM Mark Carney said, "Canada is the second largest investor in the US today. We have 40 million citizens." He said, "Without any agreement, there will definitely be a decline in trade."
Canadian minister said: Looking for reliable partners
Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said that now the country is looking for such trade partners who can be trusted. He said this during a meeting with Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
This tariff is against the CUSMA agreement
. These tariff rates are against the CUSMA trade agreement between Canada, the US and Mexico. Currently, a duty of up to 50% has been imposed on Canadian steel, aluminium and copper, which violates the rules of the agreement.
Trump said - I still stand by CUSMA
Carney said that last week Trump reiterated his commitment to the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (CUSMA). Under this agreement, Canada gets duty-free access to the US on 85% of its exports. Earlier on Tuesday, Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne met Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. During this, he said that Canada is now looking for such trade partners on whom it can "trust".
