Gwalior's 'Mahal Road' Collapses 10 Times In 10 Days, Just Month After ₹4.3 Cr Construction

Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): Gwalior’s newly constructed and most expensive "Mahal Road", has become a symbol of poor construction.

This road has collapsed 10 times in the last 10 days due to rains and it was built just a month ago. The road could not even withstand the first spell of rains.

This road, connecting Madhav Nagar to Chetakpuri, is part of a ₹19 crore water drain project. Around ₹4.30 crore was spent specifically on building this stretch, popularly known as Mahal Road, as it leads to the palace of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

However, what was supposed to be a sign of development has now become a topic of public anger and mockery. Locals say that whenever it rains, the road collapses at multiple points, forming massive potholes. Residents are angry over the condition of road, despite having such a huge budget, the road quality is worse than that of village roads.

People who travel this route daily say they had hoped the months-long inconvenience due to roadwork and drain pipeline installation would finally end with a good road. But the reality turned out to be worse. The road has been collapsing repeatedly, raising serious questions about the quality of materials and workmanship.

The administration trying to cover up the issue. As soon as a collapse is reported, workers rush to the spot, fill the pits with gravel using machines, without any proper repair or accountability.

Public anger is now at its peak. Many allege massive corruption in the road construction process. Several other roads in Gwalior are also in poor condition, with heavy rains causing major damage citywide.

After mounting pressure, Gwalior Collector Ruchika Singh Chauhan has formed a two-member inquiry committee to investigate the repeated collapse of Mahal Road. The committee has been given five days to submit its report.

Meanwhile, the issue has taken a political turn, with the Congress party raising questions and targeting the ruling government over corruption in Smart City projects. As of now, citizens await action and answers, while the road that cost crores continues to crumble under the slightest rainfall.
