The Congress party has announced that candidates performing well in the upcoming panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh will be considered for 2027 assembly poll tickets. The decision is part of a broader organisational plan that includes categorising all 403 constituencies into A, B, and C segments based on local data and political feedback.
Congress is implementing a 100-day organisational programme aimed at strengthening its base at booth, block, and district levels. According to state unit chief Ajay Rai, the party will contest panchayat elections independently and assess local leaders’ capabilities through their grassroots performance. Selection of candidates for assembly elections will follow an “organisation-based model,” moving away from preference-based selections. The party has finished forming district and city committees and will soon appoint ward and block presidents. Coordination teams will monitor progress and reports from each constituency.
Senior leaders, including former MPs and MLAs, are involved in ground-level restructuring. The party's stated goal is to identify at least 50 viable assembly candidates based on real-time data and local engagement. Congress’ strategy signals pressure tactics ahead of any alliance talks with the Samajwadi Party, which has indicated a limited seat-sharing plan for 2027.
