Once Delhi's most dreaded monsoon spot, Minto Bridge now stuns with dry underpass; Parvesh Verma shares proof

Send Push
As heavy rains soaked many parts of Delhi on Wednesday and Thursday, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma visited flood-prone areas like the Minto Bridge underpass to assess the situation. This underpass, which is often flooded during the monsoon, surprisingly remained dry despite over an hour of rainfall.

Minto bridge no longer a water trap?

Parvesh Verma said the government’s ongoing efforts have helped stop flooding in key locations this year. “Every year we saw pictures of buses submerged at Minto Bridge. But now, pump operators are alert and doing the de-watering work properly. There's no waterlogging even though it has been raining for an hour,” he said.

The underpass, which connects Connaught Place to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, has been a major problem spot in Delhi’s rainy season. However, the PWD seems to be keeping it under control this year.

Work started four months ago

The minister said the government started work on waterlogging issues around four months ago. “Some problem areas have already been fixed, and work is ongoing in others. This shows the government is serious and working honestly,” he added.

Connaught Place and Bharat Mandapam also on radar

Verma also visited Connaught Place and nearby areas to check for waterlogging. One major zone under watch is Bharat Mandapam, where a large underground water storage tank was built two years ago. Officials said the tank is now being cleaned and repaired, and the work will be completed soon.

The monsoon season usually brings traffic jams and waterlogging problems across Delhi. But this year, the PWD says they are better prepared. They’ve taken up early repair work, increased monitoring, and are focusing on better drainage to avoid disruptions.

As Delhi braces for more rain, all eyes are now on whether these steps will truly make a difference in the long run.
