Lyricist and writer Manoj Muntashir has stepped into a heated debate sparked by a controversial remark made by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, which many found offensive toward the Brahmin community. Manoj addressed the issue through a strongly worded video posted on his Instagram, where he warned Anurag about the consequences of his words.
In the video, Manoj replayed portions of Anurag’s comments, in which the director criticized the Brahmin community for objecting to his film Phule. Responding in Hindi, Manoj said, “If your income is low, reduce your spending. If your knowledge is lacking, control your speech. Anurag Kashyap, you seem to fall short in both wealth and wisdom. You are incapable of tarnishing even a fraction of the Brahmin heritage. Yet, since you’ve made your intentions clear, I’m willing to send you some photographs — then you can decide on whom you wish to unleash your filth.”
Manoj then proceeded to name 21 renowned individuals belonging to the Brahmin community. These figures included celebrated social and religious reformers, freedom fighters, and cultural icons such as Acharya Chanakya, Adiguru Shankaracharya, Lata Mangeshkar, Rani Laxmibai, etc . Emphasizing their contributions, Manoj remarked, “People like you, full of hate, will be forgotten, but the legacy of Brahmins will continue to shine.”
Calling the 'Black Friday' director as ' Sanatan Drohi' (blasphemer) and ' bimar' (ill), he said, "I wish you get well. If required, 108 Brahmans can conduct a hawan ritual to help you heal.."
He added, “I, as a Brahmin, publicly dare you to pick any one person from my list. I’ll personally send you their photograph. But if you lack the courage to act on your disgraceful comment, it’s better you learn to stay within your limits.”
This controversy stems from objections raised by members of the Brahmin community regarding the portrayal of their caste in Phule. Following their complaints, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) instructed the filmmakers to alter or remove certain scenes and dialogues. Anurag, angered by the directive, defended his film, saying that the story of social reformers needed to be told truthfully. In response to criticism online, Anurag posted a now-deleted Instagram Story replying to a comment that said “Brahmins are your father.” He wrote, “I’ll urinate on Brahmins... any problem?”
After a massive backlash, Anurag issued an apology. While he refused to retract any of his broader views, he admitted that the controversial line was inappropriate and regretted it. He also revealed that his female family members were receiving disturbing threats, including rape and death threats, and urged people to stop targeting them.
About the Film Phule is a biographical film directed by Ananth Mahadevan, focusing on the lives of Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, who were pioneers in fighting caste oppression and advocating women’s education. The film stars Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa and was initially scheduled for release on April 11, though its release has now been postponed.
