Elon Musk's $75 million support for Donald Trump: Five ways he's shaping the 2024 Presidential Election

Send Push
In a surprising development, Elon Musk has emerged as a major supporter of Donald Trump's campaign to return to the White House. Here are five ways Musk is influencing the election against Kamala Harris:

1. Financial Support
Musk established the America political action committee (Super PAC) in July, primarily aiming to support Trump and the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement. This Super PAC has received around $75 million from Musk in the past three months. It focuses on boosting Republican voter turnout in seven key swing states. The PAC's initiatives, like offering cash incentives for petition sign-ups, have generated legal debates. Philadelphia's chief prosecutor has filed a lawsuit challenging a daily $1 million lottery prize for petition signatories as an "illegal lottery scheme."

2. Campaign Trail Presence
Unlike most billionaire supporters, Musk is actively participating in Trump's campaign events. His first joint appearance with Trump was on October 5 in Butler, Pennsylvania. Musk has made several notable appearances, including one at New York's Madison Square Garden, where he declared, "I'm not just MAGA, I'm dark Gothic MAGA." He has also planned virtual town halls, including one on Election Day, November 5.

3. Government Reforms
Trump has promised to appoint Musk as head of a new "department of government efficiency," named DOGE. This move raises conflict of interest concerns given Musk's companies, SpaceX and Tesla, depend heavily on government contracts and regulations. SpaceX plays a crucial role in providing communication support in global disaster areas. At a New York event, Musk suggested cutting annual government spending by two trillion dollars, which former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers criticized as "idiotic."

4. Influence on Social Media
Since acquiring Twitter and rebranding it as X, Musk has increased visibility for right-wing content. Studies indicate that posts from Democratic accounts have seen reduced engagement on the platform. This shift has sparked concerns among White House officials about their diminished reach during crises. A Wall Street Journal investigation found that even nonpolitical accounts received predominantly conservative and election-related content.

5. Spreading Misinformation
Musk has used his massive social media following to promote Trump's platform, particularly on immigration and transgender issues. He has also spread conspiracy theories about rigged voting machines. A New York Times analysis found that nearly one-third of Musk's posts over five days contained false information or lacked context. According to the Center for Countering Digital Hate, these misleading election claims accumulated nearly 1.2 billion views in a few months.

These actions highlight Musk's significant influence in the current election cycle and his active role in supporting Trump's campaign.
