Over the past decade, the Modi government has launched a series of flagship welfare schemes aimed at improving the lives of India’s poorest citizens. These schemes have not just stayed on paper — they have brought tangible changes, from the remotest villages to bustling small towns. From affordable housing to free healthcare and financial inclusion, these initiatives are helping millions of families live with more dignity and self-reliance.
Here’s a look at seven of the biggest government schemes that have made a real impact.
1. Ujjwala Yojana: Free Gas Connections for WomenOne of the most transformative schemes for rural women has been the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). This initiative provides free LPG connections to women from poor households, helping them shift away from smoky, polluting fuels like wood and coal.
So far, over 10 crore families have benefited from this scheme, with more than 238 crore gas cylinders refilled under Ujjwala. To make LPG even more affordable, the government offers additional subsidies, saving households up to Rs 300 per cylinder, directly transferred to their bank accounts. The scheme has also created better access, with over 11,000 new gas dealerships set up across the country.
2. PM Kisan Yojana: Direct Cash Support for FarmersLaunched in 2019, the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana provides crucial financial support to small and marginal farmers. Under this scheme, eligible farmers receive ₹6,000 per year, paid in three equal instalments directly into their bank accounts.
This direct income helps over 11 crore farmers meet farming-related expenses and small household needs, offering some relief from mounting debts and middlemen.
3. Ayushman Bharat: Free Healthcare up to ₹5 LakhWhen a family member falls seriously ill, the financial burden can push poor households into debt. The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) provides health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year, for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation.
Beneficiaries can avail treatment in both government and empanelled private hospitals by showing their Ayushman Bharat Card, ensuring they get timely and quality healthcare without worrying about massive bills.
4. Swachh Bharat Mission: Toilets for AllUnder the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, millions of toilets have been built in rural and urban India. This mission aims to eliminate open defecation, which has long been a major health hazard, especially for women and children.
By ensuring toilets in every home, the government has improved hygiene, boosted safety for women, and enhanced the overall cleanliness of villages and cities alike.
5. PM Awas Yojana: Affordable Housing for the PoorA safe and sturdy home is every family’s dream. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has made this dream a reality for millions by providing financial assistance to build pucca houses.
More than 2 crore houses have already been handed over under this scheme, with many registered in women’s names, giving them added security and respect. In states like Bihar alone, lakhs of houses have been completed, offering families a solid roof over their heads.
6. Jan Dhan Yojana: Banking the UnbankedBefore 2014, many poor households did not have bank accounts, which made it harder for them to receive government benefits. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) changed that by ensuring every household has at least one bank account.
Today, over 50 crore Jan Dhan accounts help people receive subsidies, pensions, scholarships, and other benefits directly, cutting out middlemen and leakages.
7. MNREGA: Employment in VillagesThe Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) is one of India’s largest social security schemes. It guarantees at least 100 days of wage employment each year to rural households, helping the unemployed find work close to home.
Wages are directly credited to bank accounts, boosting income security. In addition to this, old-age pensions and other social assistance schemes add another layer of support for vulnerable groups.
Final Words: Welfare that Reaches the Last MileThese schemes — whether it’s free gas connections, pucca houses, toilets, free hospital care, or direct cash transfers — have changed the daily lives of crores of poor families. They empower women, protect the elderly, support farmers, and create jobs where they’re needed the most.
Together, these Modi government yojanas show that real change is possible when welfare policies are well-planned and reach the ground level. For millions, these initiatives mean more than benefits — they mean hope, respect, and a chance for a better life.
