Ex-Arsenal ace speaks out on Wayne Rooney's job and sack decision at Plymouth

Graham Stack has no doubts about Argyle's decision-making prowess despite inconsistencies continuing to plague 's side.

Argyle have failed to secure a win in their last three matches, although they did pull off a sensational comeback to draw 3-3 with in their most recent outing. The setback came shortly after Rooney witnessed his team crumble to a 5-0 defeat against from the stands, having received his first red card in the job earlier this term.

It appears Plymouth are braced for a potential relegation scrap as they prepare for a return to action at on Saturday. But it's not all doom and gloom.

Despite enduring a challenging spell at Home Park that culminated in contentious circumstances, Stack remains an ardent believer in Argyle's potential. And the ex- and shot-stopper waxed lyrical about the club's prospects under Rooney.

"Plymouth has got the potential to be a fantastic club, a really, really successful club," he told in collaboration with . "I mean a team that's got the potential to be a top-10 team in the most seasons, because of the support they've got and the stadium and the atmosphere they can get there. It's incredible, it really is. The Green Army, they are different class when they get going.

"And listen, having Wayne Rooney at the helm; he's been on a top, top run recently. I know they got hammered at when he was in the stand, but it looks like he's got them ticking, which is good."

No team has struggled more on their travels in the Championship this season than Plymouth, scraping a single point from six away games and scoring just once. Yet a four-match unbeaten run at Home Park, including three victories along the way, has sparked a ray of hope for the squad.

Morgan Whittaker and Ibrahim Cissoko have stepped up as key players going forward, while former hitman Andre Gray recently scored his first goal for the club. While the outlook seemed grim after the club failed to secure a win in their first four league matches with Rooney in charge, Stack is pleased the club have decided to stick with Rooney to now.

"It did [look precarious for Rooney]," added Stack - who made five senior appearances for the Gunners - when asked about the coach's early struggle for form. "But fair play to the chairman and the people involved above, because they could have probably pulled the trigger and got him out, and got someone else in who takes another two or three months to settle in.

"So fair play to the people at Plymouth and the hierarchy who have given him time and stuck with him. And I hope it pays off for him as well."

Rooney may feel a certain need to succeed on the south coast after failing to meet expectations in his previous role at , who gave him the boot after less than three months. His earlier success at was ultimately marred by financial woes that led to the club's relegation under his leadership.

For all his feats as a player, there's a sense Rooney has to show something more at Plymouth if he's to inspire belief he's got what it takes to match that success from the sidelines. And Stack is backing not only the legend, but Argyle as a whole to get through the tougher times and realise their potential.
