The childhood home has been sold off at a bargain after becoming overrun by feral cats. The property in Queens, New York - which was until he was four years old - was sold for £648,000, less than half of the £1.66million it was sold for in 2017, according to lawyer and Chinese real estate broker Michael X. Tang.

Recent images captured during a visit to the showed the front door wide open, revealing interior walls that had their wallpaper ripped off. Builders were seen chucking planks of wood and other debris into a skip outside the home. One worker reportedly told a neighbour the new owner was known to flip houses, and that the construction team were gutting it of everything.

Property records indicate that the new owner took out two separate mortgages, with around £70,000 of the amount dedicated to renovations. The New York Post, citing a source close to the deal, reported that the seller "just needed the money".

The two-storey home was built by the president's father, real estate developer Fred C Trump, in 1940.

It has remained vacant for years, with its only occupants a colony of feral cats.

“A beautiful house was left abandoned and no one took care of it for all this time,” a neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, said.

“No one occupied it, no one used it and it was left as an eyesore and we, the community, had to take care of it.”

The community had to pay up to have the lawn mowed just a few weeks prior, the neighbour said.

Before the construction workers arrived, notices saying that "vacate" and "water shut off" had been plastered all over the house.

The basement is also said to be infected with mold after a water pipe burst, according to the neighbour. Volunteers have stepped in to care for the cats.

When the property went up for sale in December 2016, Chinese-speaking visitors were seen driving up to the home to take pictures.

At the time, the New York Times said that Trump's "image as a successful businessman has drawn him strong admiration in ".

The buyer was a business called "Trump Birth House LLC", and turned the property into an Airbnb rental, charging £632 per night to stay in the President's childhood lodgings.

A plaque on the wall of a bedroom noted it was where "President Donald J Trump was likely conceived".
